People incapable of just closing their web browser
I find it intriguing that so many people will "like" a facebook page, then get all pissy when the author of the page doesn't post things that align with the viewer's beliefs. I see it happening all the time, especially with the tense political climate we now find ourselves in. Pages that used to report mostly about climate change issues, or pages that focused on atheism activism, or LGBTQ activism and rights.... Those pages started posting political articles - often still about their page's major theme. And now, their followers constantly complain that they're "getting all political", when the page used to be about science, or just religion, etc... What I want to know is how the fuck do they think it's not relevant?Politics influences every single part of our lives, even if it's not obvious at first glance. Especially when it comes to religion in the US. Those two things are not supposed to be intertwined, however the way US Christianity takes over the system, dominates every discussion, and is an unofficial requirement to run for governmental office means that it's always going to have a seat at the table. And with the new government of Trump's ego taking over all we hold dear, politics is going to become an integral part of Science. Trump's interest or lack thereof in regards to different science fields is going to affect funding, legitimacy, management based off of the results of science research, clean energy research, even just plain common sense.
These people - who are not internet trolls, just idiots - get upset when the page doesn't post the things they want to see. Sure, I'm a little overwhelmed and stressed by the sheer quantity of political information coming at me since this time last year, but I recognize that it's better to be informed and know what's going on and how it's going to affect me then suddenly have something happen and not know why or how or what the hell is going on in my world. Not only that, but the owner of the facebook page or blog is allowed to post whatever the hell he wants. It's his damn page. If 'viewers' don't like the changing content, they don't have to read it. It's as simple as exiting out of that webpage. It's as easy as saying "I'm not in the mood right now" and moving on to something else. But somehow these people seem to think that they individually can tell the owner of the page what they are and aren't allowed to post, usually with a treat of "i'll unfollow you if you don't go back to what the page was about before..." And usually, the owner of the page tells them to go right ahead. It's no water off of their back to lose one or even 100 followers. Leaving the page isn't going to hurt their feelings, so go ahead and do it, make things better for everyone else.
Often, it's not even like these pages say they are only going to post about science topics. There is a FB page called "A Science Enthusiast" and in the description of the page it says:
And the description of the author follows the same bent....
So it's not like he's saying he's going to write about and post articles only about really serious science research. It's his personal FB blog of things he finds amusing, interesting, educational, frustrating, irritating, important, etc... The only rules and restrictions of the blog content is whatever he finds interesting.
This morning, he posted this:
Which adheres to his requirement for his page of "thoughts and views on different things". Pretty standard, right? And one of his "followers" got all upset that he was posting about politics, not science. Even though it's not like his entire page is about science, just because the name of the page is "A Science Enthusiast".
And really, with all the shit that the US has done - Japanese internment camps, trail of tears, slavery, killing off all the bison, slaughtering the natives when arriving to this country, being shitty to other countries "just because", developing and then dropping nuclear bombs killing so many innocents, pretty much jumpstarting the instability in the middle-east for our own profits, using drone attacks to target suspected terrorists and actually killing civilians, etc... With all that shit, you really want to say that the Affordable Care Act (otherwise known as Obamacare) is the biggest failure in american history? That's the worst thing you can think of? Providing 200,000+ people with healthcare, despite the flaws in the legislation (arguably put there by Republicans to ensure it would "fail") is really that awful?
I repeat... It's his damn page. He can post whatever the fuck he wants to. If you don't like it you don't have to read it, or follow it, or be a part of that community. I hate to use the republican's favorite catchphrase for liberals, but seriously... stop "whining" about other people's posts on their FB blogs!
I'm sure someone could and probably would say the same thing to me if I linked this under the post, saying that I'm just whining about someone who has a different opinion. Then we get into a twisty endless loop of who is really being a little whiney brat and needs to grow up and get over it. I admit I didn't have to spend all this time writing this blog, I could have been doing much more useful things with my time. But I needed to vent and remark upon how irritating it is to have people dictate what you do with your time and your personal blogs/pages. Which I have now done. Yay for me :)
